Greece Added to Visa Waiver Program

VWP travel

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced today the designation of Greece as a member of the Visa Waiver Program(VWP). From the DHS press release:

"Our efforts to guard against terrorism while enhancing legal travel and trade depend upon close collaboration with our international partners,"said Secretary Napolitano. "I commend our partners in Greece for committing to strong screening and security standards and enhanced information sharing for travel by Greek citizens to the United States as we work together to protect our citizens and strengthen our economies."

Greece's VWP designation represents a major step forward in the continued and long-standing economic and security partnership between the United States and Greece--reflecting more than two years of coordination between the two countries on Greece's entry into VWP.

In accordance with the VWP designation process, DHS determined that Greece complies with key security and information-sharing requirements--such as enhanced law enforcement and security-related data sharing with the United States; timely reporting of lost and stolen passports; and the maintenance of high counterterrorism, law enforcement, border control, aviation and document security standards. In turn, Greek citizens will be permitted to travel to the United States for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa.

Greek citizens will be able to visit the United States without visas in approximately 30 days.

For more information about the VWP, visit travel.state.govor the Electronic System for Travel Authorizationwebsite.

Don't Hold Your Breath

If you were holding your breath all weekend in anticipation of what might come out of the meeting President Obama is scheduled to havewith Senators Schumer and Graham later today, you might as well let it out. During the press gaggle aboard Air Force One this morning, Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton revealed a bit moreon the agenda:

Q Just to follow, can you talk to us a bit about the President's meeting later today in the Oval Office with Senator Schumer and Graham on immigration?

MR. BURTON: It's as simple as getting an update from them on efforts to create bipartisan immigration legislation.

Doesn't sound very promising, does it?

Obama Wants to Get the Ball Rolling on Immigration Reform...Again

According to the LA Times, immigration reform is on the President's agenda next week. A meeting will reportedlytake place on Monday with Sens. Chuck Schumer and Lindsey Graham to discuss immigration reform legislation. The bill is expected to closely follow the Obama Administration's original immigration agenda.

The timing of this "renewed effort"does not go unnoticed. The LA Timesarticlesays that Obama wants "to advance a bill through Congress before lawmakers become too distracted by approaching midterm elections."But let's not forget there is also a huge immigration rally planned for March 21stin Washington. I think the timing has less to do with midterm elections and more to do with the thousands of immigration activists that will be knocking on Obama's front door in a couple of weeks. Perhaps he thinks he'll look better if he can refer to the Schumer-Graham meeting and say, "We haven't forgotten about immigration reform and I'm working with lawmakers to get legislation into Congress as soon as possible,"rather than have nothing to show the supporters to whom he promised immigration reform in his first year.

USCIS Revises Form I-485 and Filing Locations

In an effort to streamline and centralize its application processing, USCIS has changed the filing locations for Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. I-485 applications should now be addressed to USCIS Lockbox facilities instead of Service Centers (with a couple of exceptions). In addition, USCIS has revised Form I-485:

Beginning February 25, 2010, most applicants must submit Form I-485 to a USCIS Lockbox facility, depending on the eligibility category under which they are filing, as provided in the form instructions. USCIS Service Centers will forward all Form I-485 applications to the appropriate Lockbox facility until March 29, 2010. USCIS will accept previous versions of Form I-485 until March 29, 2010. After March 29, 2010, USCIS will only accept the Form I-485 dated '12/03/09.' Any previous versions of the the form that are submitted will be rejected. After the transitional period, the Service Centers will return any incorrectly filed Form I-485 with instructions to send the application to the correct location.

Be sure to use the new Form I-485 to avoid any delay in processing. Wondering how long it will take to process an application or petition? USCIS publishes current processing time informationon its website. You can also check your case statusor sign up for case updates.

Reader Frustrated with Lack of Movement on Immigration Reform

comprehensive immigration reform now

About.com reader Tamikatook to the Immigration Issues forumthis week to express her frustration with the lack of movement on immigration reform.

I want to know, why is it so hard for President Obama to address the issue with immigration? If he passes a law to make illegal immigrants pay a fine and allows them to work in the U.S. it will benefit the economy greatly, especially since we are in such an economic crisis! I have been married for 5 years and I have 2 children by my husband but I have been the sole provider for my family. It is hard and unfair when I see people from other countries come to the U.S. with no problems or issues other than to look for a better life, as my husband thought he was doing, and they can get papers easier and quicker because they are not of Jamaican descent. Healthcare reform is important but so is the immigration issue and we have been waiting far too long for this issue to be addressed. It was talked about within the first 100 daysof Obama coming into office but now it's like it's a lost cause.

Tamika is in good company. Many people feel that the Administration is dragging its feet on immigration reform, but this does not mean that the issue is dying. Reform supporters continue to press forward: lawmakers are working to get the discussion started(one billhas already been introduced), and in March, activists will marchon Washington to demand immigration reform.

Do you share Tamika's frustration? How many of you think we'll be waiting until 2011 before immigration reform legislation becomes the focus in Congress?
